Carbon Reduction Target

Paris agreement

To keep global warming to no more than 1.5°C  – as called for in the Paris Agreement – emissions need to be reduced by 45% by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050.

European Union

As around 75% of EU buildings are still energy inefficient, there is an urgent need to scale up investments in energy renovations.Member States have included in their plans, investments in energy renovations of private and public buildings and investments in the construction of new highly energy efficient buildings.

  • Energy Efficiency Directive

Extends the obligation to renovate 3% of central government buildings to all public buildings, at local, regional and national level which have a total useful floor area of more than 250 m2. EU countries should renovate the buildings to the new nearly zero-energy building or zero-emission building standard.

  • Nearly-zero Energy Buildings

Since 2020, all new buildings in the EU are required to be ‘nearly-zero energy buildings’. This will be replaced by a further enhanced ‘zero-emission buildings’ requirement, starting from 2028 for new buildings owned by public bodies and 2030 for all other new buildings.

  • Renovation Wave

The Renovation Wave aims to renovate 35 million buildings by 2030, at least doubling the annual rate of energy renovations in the EU.

By reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, as well as creating green jobs in the construction sector, which is dominated by local businesses, the Renovation Wave will improve overall living standards for Europeans.

United States

Architects estimate that 75 percent of existing U.S. buildings require renovation to meet the emission reduction targets necessary to mitigate climate change. An estimated 75% of U.S. buildings will be new or renovated by 2035.

  • Enery Star

ENERGY STAR Version 7.0 is the latest standard for residential windows, doors, and skylights, which went into effect on October 23, 2023. It significantly updates certification criteria, introduces a revised U.S. Climate Zone Map, and sets more stringent U-factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) requirements.

  • The Inflation Reduction Act

IRA is a U.S. federal law enacted in 2022 that aims to reduce the federal budget deficit, lower prescription drug costs, and invest in domestic energy production while promoting clean energy.

  • Building Energy Code Program

Funded through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the RECI Initiative supports states, cities, Tribal Nations, and their partners implement resilient and efficient energy codes across the country.Existing building energy standard follow IECC and ASHRAE Standard 90.1.
